English Manga Edit List

With the ever increasing popularity of anime and manga comes the positive and the negative. This is easy to see. The positive is, of course, a much wider selection of manga, including series that five years ago many would have bet real money on never seeing the light of day in English. Lower cost of graphic novels is also an obvious plus. No longer are we paying over fifteen dollars for a single graphic novel.

However, with the good comes the bad. As a result of the manga boom, the medium has been thrust into the public eye. Publishers are now more concerned than ever before about making sure that their products are "family friendly". What does this translate into? Edits. Edits to the artwork; to the translation, and to the names of characters. After the recent controversy over to the numerous (poorly done) edits to the mature manga Tenjho Tenge by CMX, along with the news that has come to light that two long awaited products published by Viz have have fallen victim to this craze it was suggested that a list of edited manga be made.

This brings us to the purpose of this page. This page is meant to list the various edits made to English translated manga by American publishers. (Let's not include English manga publishers like Chuang Yi who are forced to operate under the censorship laws of other countries; in this case Singapore.) It will not, at this time, include translation changes [edits] or names changes. For now, we should just concentrate on changes to the artwork.

Now, all publishers have edited their manga at one time or another. Deciding to boycott an entire product line from these companies will not accomplish anytime except to say that we do not want English translated manga. So support the products that are well done. Do not support the products listed on this page however. That will do nothing except let the people involved in the production of these censored products that we approve of the work they are doing. That we can not decide for ourselves what is acceptable for us to see. Do however, write a letter and sent it through snail mail explaining WHY you are not supporting their products. Don't sent e-mail. It is easy to send an e-mail, but taking the time to write and mail a letter shows the company that what you are saying holds weight.

City Hunter volume 1 Gutsoon Nudity covered up

Descendants of Darkness volume 4 Viz A scene of oral sex was edited with the removal of the character doing the, er... deed. It should be noted that this is a male/male scene.

DragonBall volumes 1-3 (Initial print run. Copies with a 13+ rating are unedited.) Viz Shots of young Goku in the nude, as well as other nudity, was covered up.

DragonBall Z multiple volumes Viz Shots of young Gohan in the nude, as well as other (female) nudity covered up. Violence edits unknown.

Geobreaders multiple volumes CPM Manga Nudity was covered up with swimsuits. The second edition (smaller version) restored some edits, but left others.

Ghost in the Shell (Original large edition) Dark Horse Manga Two pages were removed, with nudity and a sexual act.

GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka volume 1 Tokyopop A swastika was edited out of the first volume.

Initial D multiple volumes Tokyopop Sexual scenes exited, names changed, and various other edits in order to make the series more "youth" friendly. The first printing of the first volume was unedited. Subsequent printings of the first volume are reportedly censored.

I's Multiple volumes(?) Viz Nipples changed to stars. (Just in case you couldn't tell that it was edited otherwise...)

Naruto multiple volumes Viz In Naruto's shape changing technique, when he changes into a [nude] female, his nipples are removed.

No Need for Tenchi volume 1 (original left-to-right edition, 11th or 12th printing and earlier.) Viz Ryoko giving the audience the middle finger turned into a fist.

Pokemon multiple volumes Viz Breasts on the female characters reduced. Breastlines on clothes heightened. More details: Pokemon: Den-Geki Pikachu Uncensored.

Slayers: Medieval Mayhem CPM Manga Nudity covered up. (I believe that was the edit...)

Tenjho Tenge multiple volumes(?) CMX Manga Nudity covered up. Sound effects used to cover nudity. Various panels zoomed in on to hide nudity.

Tokyo Tribes multiple volumes Tokyopop Various things censored. Marked with a "censored" bar, making edits easy to spot.

Video Girl Ai multiple volumes Viz Some nudity covered up. Other edits. Pages removed? Viz did not do these edits, they were done in Japan resulting from pressure from the public on the Japanese publishers. Those in Japan no longer have access to the uncensored works either. (The French, however, do...)
